on the elevator on way to class. overhear conversation. kid talking about a girl who lost three iPhones within two week period who paid him to write her papers... I'm a good, responsible student. how do I find myself in jeopardy of failing all of a sudden?!?!?

http://cyberped10.blogspot.com/

here is a link i want to check out when i have a little more time

this cyberped blog is a great resource for us, and i just want to say thank you to meredith and ray for their work to provide us with such resources.

thank you.

i know that over the summer i would like to revisit a lot of these websites to explore in much more depth what all is out there.

thanks again!

see you guys in class.... can't wait to see the attire. ;)

http://chicagoartistscoalition.org/

i like the website design. well organized visually. i also enjoy browsing the gallery by category.

i like this piece.

Byron Gin, White-throated Sparrow, 2010, oil on canvas, 22×22ins, $1700

a little pricey for me, but nice.

http://blog.artsusa.org/

i feel lost. i can't find the "about us" area of the blog.... who are you? (head over to the new area of my website under cyberped portfolio and check out my "who are you" presentation) ;)

i found myself reading an article questioning grad school... to-go-to-graduate-school-or-not?
it is very much an individual question and i gather this blog is written from more of an art administrators pov. (by far not my expertise) but i found the article engaging some of my own thoughts about grad school. it has not been easy. pretty damn challenging really, but i'm happy about that. one part that stuck out in this article was

"If you choose to go back to school, you’ll likely learn some very valuable lessons, build up a network of peers, and perhaps have other doors open to you that may not be there otherwise."

so true. in some respect, this sums it up simply. i am learning valuable lessons and learning more about myself and what interests me. who knows what doors may open, but the main thing here that i key in on... my network of peers. my friends. my new family. :) i'm a cheezy dork, i know, but to my fellow m.a.t.-ers and those m.a.a.-ers i have come to know, i love you guys. bear hugs! let's try to not fall out of touch over the summer. work hard, play harder! see you in the sun!!!!

why can't I text pics???

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

oh dorm, how I will not miss you. thank you for the morning fire drill today. I like how you use my education as a means to prove a point. these kids don't see missing the first hour of class as punishment. I'm paying too much for this shit. no one over the age of 18 should live here.

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

i tried sending a video to the blog but I'm not sure if it's going to work.... hasn't published yet.

reading convention here in Chicago

http://www.reading.org/General/Default.aspx

my mom's school is funding her a trip to Chicago for this conference. i may do my video about it, but i wanted to inform you guys if anyone may be interested. it's huge. i'm excited about the children's literacy.... illustrators will be there too! yipeee!

http://www.youthlearn.org/

what is YouthLearn? check the FAQ and here's a snippet of what you get:
"YouthLearn is a growing nonprofit initiative to advance the education and well-being of young people through youth-driven, technology-infused learning. The YouthLearn Initiative offers youth development professionals and educators comprehensive services and resources for using technology to design exciting learning environments."

as i read the part that says "technology-infused learning" my mind quickly went to questioning "well, what about learning that can take place outside of the classroom... specifically OUTSIDE."
i think this is just a symptom of me being inside on the computer all day. i'm tired of it. my eyeballs hurt and i need some fresh air. stupid living arrangement. i'm ready for a home. ok, this is counter-productive.... i'm ranting. too many blogs do this. moving forward....

YouthLearn seems like a great organization.

check out the information here http://www.youthlearn.org/learning/teaching/techniques/modeling/modeling

VERY INTERESTING INFO. enjoyed reading about how students learn by modeling.
here's a tip from the page...

tip

Do you encourage the use of journals as much as we do? Then you have to keep one yourself and use it even outside of class. Show the kids what you did in yours yesterday or last week on your own time. The kids will see that you really believe in journals and that they can be fun.

Or take a technique like mapping. The reason we like them so much is that they're a simple way to get kids planning, thinking and generating new ideas before they rush into a project—all of which are learning habits we want them to internalize. If you make mapping an early part of every project, you'll demonstrate a pattern of thinking that kids may very well adopt regularly themselves, especially if you show them that you do it outside of class in your personal journal.

done and done! who doesn't love journals and maps!?!? this won't be hard for me to do. i already do it. booyah. model that children. :)

i was checking out all the links and noticed under the calendar that there is
BREAKDANCING THURS 6-8 for ages 8 and up....
so how up is up? i am up. can i go breakdance!??!?!?! i got some moves!

http://carrotrevolution.blogspot.com/

first off, the colors in this blog hurt my eyes. it makes me want to move along to the next website. something about the design just doesn't put the blog's best foot forward. it's not terrible, but for example, the tag cloud colors are not working for me. i can hardly see the darker words on my monitor.

i clicked iphone under the tag cloud (it's not easy to see, but it's there)

i just downloaded an app that turns my phone into a mouse. sweet.
miguel, if you're reading, this app allows you to use your phone as a remote for presentations.

and then i went on to check out the next suggested app, oblique strategies. for those times when you have a creative block, it helps to generate thought.... well i'm not sure i liked the example cards it showed, but then something else caught my attention... then something else from there. before i know it, here i am almost two hours later and not progressing on schoolwork. crap. i need some fresh air. i just downloaded an aquarium app for my phone. now i have a pet fish.

[[[how do you like the step-by-step commentary on my surfing...lol (is it still called that?)]]]

oh and there's also this type app that is perfect for the self portrait type assignment we had. i almost downloaded it, but decided to wait.

oh oh oh, more more more..... here's the link to the page i'm finding all this stuff.
http://carrotrevolution.blogspot.com/search/label/iPhone

there's an app that allows you to edit and create movies.... hmmm. i wonder if i can do this entire assignment from my iphone. crazy.

there is a lot of information here. seems to be the running theme. not a bad thing. i'm happy to be learning about all these resources.

http://carrotrevolution.blogspot.com/search/label/Illustration
there's a post about using podcasts in the classroom. what a great idea!

okay, i could explore all day, but i gotta move on to the next website.

http://www.evc.org/ and http://www.street-level.org/

what is it about media that kids love?

i loved making home videos/movies when i was a kid. i used to have this book that gave tricks for filming. for example, one time i put blue plastic wrap over the camera lens so that it looked like everything was under water. didn't so much work, but the idea seemed cool to me.

another time i remember my cousin and i made this movie called "someone's in my bedroom." we cut a window frame shape out of a piece of poster board and hung it up for a scene where my cousin dressed in a mask climbed through it like she was climbing into the bedroom of a house. lol. too funny.

this is only the beginning. another time two friends and i dressed in my mom's old dresses and pretended to host a home shopping network show. man, those were the days.

i think it's great that organizations such as the Educational Video Center in New York and Street-Level Youth Media in Chicago exist.

i also remember another video some friends and i made for our history class in seventh grade. how great that my teacher provided us the opportunity to do an assignment using media. i still remember how much fun we had making that video.

i wonder where all of my old videos are. hopefully they haven't been lost over the years. i'd hope that my parents would know those are more valuable than gold to me. if i could only get my hands on them. i'll have to do a search next time i make it home. wish me luck.

http://www.artletter.com/index.html

"art letters out" ... that's a lot of art letters.

i'm a letter writer. sometimes they're received. sometimes not.
once i got the idea that Undelivered Letters would be a cool band name. not so sure that's so cool, but i thought it was at the time. (back when i was more into music, playing guitar and drums)
i figured i could make a lot of songs out of my undelivered letters.
anywho, back to the art letters...

so this guy Paul Klein is credited for the development of the art scene in River West. impressive.

from the art letter info link on the website:
Klein has championed Chicago by writing and distributing ArtLetter , an online examination of art in Chicago. He previews exhibitions and encourages readers to broaden their horizons by embracing unexpected quality, new venues, dynamic artists and strong exhibitions.

sign up for the newsletter!

http://chicagoartmagazine.com/

first i always click the "about" button when visiting a new site. for this one, i quickly followed that with the "chicago art map" link. sweet. who doesn't love maps. what a great resource for galleries and up-to-date information on exhibits. i like how they give their weekend pick. looking for a gallery and not sure where to go... here are some suggestions. check out the website and you'll get your answer. a great websource for art in chicago. i'm starting to see so many connections, the community is becoming smaller and homey. :)

http://www.pbs.org/art21/

i really like how art21 groups the videos into themes. so far i've watched play, humor, identity, and stories. i've noticed a running theme that at some point each artist mentions something about their childhood.

watching these videos can be frustrating though. they are always having to rebuffer. annoying. i used to have some of these... the first two seasons i think. they were xmas gifts.

it does seem like art21 is everywhere right now, but i think it's only for those in the field. i mentioned it at work and no one had heard of it.

i have a feeling i'll definitely be referencing the lesson plans down the road at some point. if just to generate ideas, i'm sure they'll be useful. good to know they're there.

Community Arts Network

http://www.communityarts.net/

i clicked on the first link since prison has been in recent discussion and i started reading the excerpt. then i realized i don't have the time to read all of it. then i realized i need to read more. i wish reading felt more natural to me. (is this a observation reflection... whoops, wrong blog.)

http://www.communityarts.net/readingroom/archivefiles/2010/03/book_excerpt_by.php

this CAN website has a lot of information.

CAPE website

http://www.capeweb.org/index.html

WHY TEACHER/ARTIST PARTNERSHIPS?
Teacher/artist partnerships challenge both partners to broaden their thinking and to expand their effective practice. "The presence of the arts in a school acts as a leveling force. It creates a space a 'demilitarized zone' in which educators can reflect on their teaching practice, as well as a generative force, creating an exotic terrain in which educators can reconfigure their relationships."

Renaissance in the Classroom, pg. 19

i think i need this book they keep quoting. could be good for thesis work.

here's another great resource for resources :)
a list of some things we are already aware of, but another compilation of resources non the less. always a good thing even if it's information overload at times.
http://www.capeweb.org/resources.html#02

i like their concept for a "living library"

LIVING LABORATORY
CAPE believes that the intersection of formal research and action research is an essential element of school transformation.
CAPE works to be a learning organization moving from an arts education program delivery model to a living laboratory in which practitioners and formal researchers collaborate to both develop new understandings of their own practices, as well as to contribute to the discourse in the field.

Stockyard Institute

http://www.stockyardinstitute.org/index.html

never heard of the stockyard institute. i'm glad i've been introduced to it though. i checked out their outreach programs and came across this video.

Gang Proof Suit video... just another reminder of what these kids fear.

Gang Proof Suit from Stockyard Institute on Vimeo.

Area Chicago dot org, where'd you go?

i just watched the video on the homepage and it made me happy, but now the website seems to be down. it's not my internet, b/c i can access other websites, but not this one. strange. anyway, i can say a few things b/c i am already a little bit familiar with this website. i used it as a resource last semester and referenced it in a presentation about maps. i love the chicago map project they have (which is what the video was based on). you can submit your own. i'm going to do one. i've been meaning to since last semester. anyway, maybe i'll restart firefox and see if i can get back on the website.... i'll come back with more later.

Chicago Art Department

"try it, make it, share it" the mission statement for CAD. love it. i like what these guys are about. watched the video and it got me excited. now i want to go make some art.

forecast for "spring break"

ME=OUTSIDE!!!!!

what's in a name?

names hold a lot of weight, i think.
i wasn't overly thrilled with the name of our first link.

http://badatsports.com/

i get it, but it just encourages the stereotype that artists aren't athletes. boo. oh well, no major. aside from that, i like the website.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://storycorps.org/

love this!!!! reminded me of my summer reading freshman year at appalachian state university.
Oral History by Lee Smith http://www.amazon.com/Oral-History-Lee-Smith/dp/0345410289
i love storytelling.

i spent most of my time on this website navigating the education section.

posting sound clips...???

how do you post a sound clip? there's no button for that.

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

TMI for sure.

my head is overloaded with great information, but it feels like mush.

need to decompress.

my question to you: how do you navigate your online travels?

i'd like to have a discussion on how to navigate information on the interwebs. any takers?

i find it a little overwhelming to take it all in. i feel like i'm missing things, like for instance, i know there were a bunch of posts on the ning in the past few days that i haven't had a chance to read.

also, can you set the blog to tell you that people posted comments? it's easy for me to stay up on a virtual conversation when i get emails on my phone from facebook that tell me what is being said. on the other hand when i get an email from the ning (which is never consistent) i know there's this conversation happening, but i can't read it without logging in which is too much of a process when i'm on my phone on the go.

as well, i'll be on a network (say facebook or the ning) and i'll get a blip of a topic or news piece that i want to read more about; however, for times sake and to stay on task (trying to avoid distraction of my purpose at hand) i'll continue on, making a mental note (we know those don't work) and then i'll forget to go back to it later.

i feel like i need to go run around the block for some fresh air. my eyeballs hurt, as well as my shoulders, and back. i'm getting old.
test: here's an attempt to post a blog via text message from my phone....

testing

if i post a blog will it feed on my facebook? let's post and find out.....

this week's readings/websites

pic from John's class last semester... skype'n with Craig Roland, the blogger behind "The Art Teacher's Guide to the Internet" http://artjunction.org/blog/

i'm amazed at how extensive the blog is. i'm sure Craig doesn't have all the time in the world, yet he makes time for the blog. i think he has created a great resource.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://go.artic.edu/cp/home/loginf

annoying... i'm trying to find an event in May and there's no simple listing of the month on the calendar. i shouldn't have to search for that information.

i'm trying to post an image here of a screen shot so you can see that there is no event listed on the school's calendar on the portal for may 6, 2010, but in fact, Chuck Close will be speaking at fullerton hall. (frustrated with navigating this.... )

i did a search for my closest school.... southloop.

time to go plaid!

i'm a little behind here and need to catch up so i'm putting it into ludicrous speed.
here's a video reference for my blog to put you into terms with my verbiage. :)

the last slide of my keynote presentation will picture this image and will say "...the end..."

of course there's more to it though. i have a plan. :)

oh, IDEA... i think we should all rendezvous for this pic. it'll be fun!!!!

the Art Institute of Chicago, my kind of town

hey kiddos, ie fellow grad students/gonna-be-teachers: there are lesson plans available on the art institute's website. check it out. check it all out so we can chit-chat in class about it.

here's the link for the lesson plans...
http://www.artic.edu/aic/education/trc/lessonplans.html

arts integration: AIC/CPS: murals
http://www.artic.edu/aic/education/mural_project/

question just out of curiosity: there is so much information out there available at our fingertips, literally... so how do you go about navigating it? how do you keep from getting overwhelmed by it?

it's overwhelming my eyeballs. they burn. ...and i have so many browser windows open i have no idea what to do. any advice welcomed.
